BC Professor Named ''Distinguished''

Dr. Abdul H. Rifai, a professor of political science here at Berea, recently accepted the prestigious Distinguished Political Science Award from the Kentucky Political Science Association (KPSA).

Unlike many of their other awards, the KPSA only gives out this particular honor when an political scientist delivers contributions that are deemed particularly outstanding. Dr. Rifai is only the ninth recipient of the award since its inception in 1962 and is also the second Berea College professor to win, the first being Dr. Louis Smith in 1991.

Born in Lebanon, Dr. Rifai graduated with a B.A. in Public Administration from the American University of Beirut. His other degrees include an M.A. in Government and Social Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington and a Ph.D. in International Relations and Organizations from the American University in Washington D.C. Although most of his teaching career has taken place here at Berea, Dr. Rifai also worked at American University and the Saudi Embassy in Washington.

It’s his extensive work outside of the classroom, however, that earned him the praise he’s receiving. Along with his embassy work in Washington, he has also been a participant in many professional panels and conferences. Lectures are also one of his many specialties, and he has given many regarding a wide variety of political issues not just at Berea, but also at neighboring colleges and universities. His work is far from over, and Dr. Rifai is currently revising what he calls his “Lexicon of International Politics” here at Berea.
