The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recently named Berea basketball star Jordan Samuels as one of two male athletes of the year.
The award was not exclusive to basketball as candidates for the award included athletes from baseball, cross country, soccer, golf, tennis, swimming/diving and track. Because of his efforts, the Mountaineers enjoyed their best season in four years finishing second in the regular season and runner up in the post-season tournament. Samuels was recognized not only for his hard work and dedication on the court, but off the court as well, where he helped collect more than 800 pounds of canned food for the Sodexho Cans of America Food Drive.
This was Samuel's last year competing in the #33 Mountaineer jersey. The senior education studies major says, “I’m humbled and thankful for the opportunity to even be considered, because I don’t know what made them pick me. They could have chosen any player out of the KIAC, or any other player from Berea for that matter, so I thank God.”
Samuels and the Mountaineers finished second during the regular season and runner-up in the 2007-08 post season tournament. “Even though we didn’t win the championship we still had a good season”, said. Samuels. He finished his career with 1,028 points, 538 rebounds, 184 assists and 97 steals. “I feel that my mission here at Berea after fours was definitely a job well done,” Samuels added after being asked whether or not he successfully accomplished his goal.
Samuels plans to return to his hometown of Frankfort, KY, where he intends to work as a health teacher and basketball coach with high school students.
Andrew Varns, a soccer player at Brescia, was named the other KIAC male athlete of the year.
