Berea Community Joins in Straw Bale Building

The Sustainability and Environmental Studies (SENS), along with a service learning grant from CELTS program, sponsored a Straw Bale Building Workshop for the Berea community on April 18 to help construct the new community-supported agriculture shed.

Straw bale building workshop

Participants learned the basics of straw bale building and helped to construct a new shed that will be used as a site for the Community Supported Agriculture program that allows community member to buy vegetables from the college gardens weekly. Kelly Cutchin, student coordinator of the straw bale building workshop, along with others have been working to rebuild the shed and improve its design. The former shed was appoximately three years old when it was demolished. Altogether the materials were estimated to cost around $1,000. Cutchin commented, "It went really well. Many people showed up, the weather was beautiful, we had everything we needed. I had a great time and feel it was successful workshop."

Participants that attended the workshops were served salads made from vegetables from the college garden.
