| Cross Country Team's @ Nationals
“I am ecstatic. Not only did I do well, everyone else did to,” says Britin Ellard, who will compete in the national cross country meet. “It is exciting for me because I get to go to Nationals and represent Berea during my senior year.”
A very tired Antonio Marchi approaching the finish line
Ellard ran with the women’s cross country team and is the only woman to qualify for the national meet. She is also an Academic All-American nominee.
The men’s cross country team, led by Runner of the Year Antonio Marchi, ranked first in the conference. This first-place finish guarantees the team a trip to the national meet. “I am happy that I qualified for Nationals,” says Marchi. “I love traveling to different places and look forward to competing in Nationals.”
The rest of the team followed Marchi’s lead. The top 5 runners from Berea placed within the top 10 of the conference. Jarrod Wilder placed 4th, Trey Baker placed 5th, Jonathon Castor placed 8th and Lucas Warner placed 9th. Overall, Berea placed first in the conference.
As the coach of the 1st place team, Mike Johnson received the Coach of the Year award. ” I am extremely pleased with the team’s finish more than this reward,” says Johnson. “This is the first time in a few years that Berea has gotten to go to Nationals. Berea was in a region with the number one team in the nation, therefore we couldn’t beat them. The structural change to conferences was the perfect opportunity for Berea to qualify.”
Nationals are being held in Kenosha, Wis., November 21-23.
