| 'Naked Economics' author Charles Wheelan speaks at Berea
Dr. Charles Wheelan, N.P.R. commentator, public speaker, author, and senior lecturer in the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago spoke at the convocation in the Phelps-Stokes Auditorium on Oct. 29.
Dr. Charles Wheelan
Wheelan's talk was titled, "Undressing Policy and Planning Issues of Today," and focused on some of the most pressing public policy issues of our time.
He emphasized on the need for attention to four critical areas in the economy: investment in the development of human capital, developing a more frugal budget, passing a bipartisan health care bill and factoring the environmental cost of economic growth into the economy.
He said these four areas are simmering problems that, if not addressed, could significantly impact the future.
Later in the evening, Wheelan attended an interactive question-and-answer session with students. Questions ranged from preparation for graduate admissions to addressing health care and education reform.
Wheelan is the former Midwest correspondent for The Economist and author of Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science. He has written for the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and other publications.
Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Chicago, Wheelan was Director of Policy and Communications for Chicago Metropolis 2020, a civic group promoting healthy regional growth in the Chicago area.
Wheelan has been a frequent contributor to the Motley Fool Radio Show on National Public Radio and to the 848 program on WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio.
The event was co-sponsored with the Department of Economics and Business.
