Kentucky Educational Television Broadcasting '09 Berea College Christmas Concert 12/12/2010 Author(s): Jay
The 2009 Berea College Christmas Concert at Union Church will be broadcast on the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) network this holiday season. This professionally produced video features the award-winning Black Music Ensemble, the popular Bluegrass Ensemble and other performance groups with nearly a dozen soloists in an hour long concert.
The concert titled “Music for All Peoples of the Earth” was recorded in December 2009 and will be broadcast nine times in December, including at 9 p.m. (KETKY) on Christmas Eve and 10 a.m. (KET) on Christmas morning.
Black Music Ensemble, directed by Dr. Kathy Bullock, performs the traditional spiritual “Here’s a Pretty Little Baby,” the traditional gospel song “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child,” and the contemporary gospel favorite “Silver and Gold.”
Berea College’s Bluegrass Ensemble, directed by Al White, performs “The Russian Dance” from Tchaikovsky “The Nut Cracker” followed by “Coventry Carol,” written by an unknown composer in the sixteenth century. Their final piece is the lively “Must be Santa.”
Additionally, Berea’s wind ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Charles Turner, performs “I Saw Three Ships” and the popular “Sleigh Ride.” The jazz ensemble accompanies soprano soloist Jessica French in a rendition of “Santa Baby.”
The women’s choir performs a selection of contemporary songs not traditionally recognized as Christmas carols. Instead, this group performs selections focusing on the ideals of peace, unity and acceptance. This group’s first selection is “One Voice,” which begins as a solo before growing into a duet, trio and a full chorus. Additional selections include “Edelweiss” and “From a Distance.”
Under the direction of Dr. Stephen Bolster, three vocal performance groups sing a variety of compositions. The chamber singers perform “Esta Noche,” a Spanish traditional carol. The community choir performs “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree,” and the concert choir performs Felix Mendelssohn’s “There Shall a Star Come out of Jacob” and the Christmas anthem “There Is a Flower.”
