| Need Help? Check out the Learning Center
Located in Draper Hall, the Berea College Learning Center (LC) has been a campus resource since the early 1970’s. The LC employs student consultants who are trained to assist Berea's students in the development of critical thinking, writing and communication skills. The LC has a variety of resources to help all students. Some of their workshops include one-on-one peer tutoring, assistance with grammar and weekly creative writing activities. The LC holds more specific programs on subjects such as time management skills and avoiding plagiarism.
The Learning Center is located on the first floor of Draper.
According to consultant manager, Lucy Weakly, the most significant resource that the LC provides is the consultations that the peer tutors offer students. Lucy points out that “no other school group provides these one-on-one tutorials--they are valuable because students feel comfortable working with the trained students at the LC.” Weakly, a senior Biology major from Bagdad, Kentucky, has been working with the Learning Center since her sophomore year.
If you are at sophomore standing or higher and are struggling with a writing assignment, you can submit your work through e-mail to the LC with a description of the assignment, the teacher’s name and the course. Usually within 24 hours, the LC will get back to you with comments on your work unless it is during midterms or finals, then it may take a little longer due to the amount of papers being submitted.
Are you a senior? The LC offers services for graduating students, assisting them with Graduate Requirement Exams prep, resume-writing and interview skills.
Are you from another country? The LC helps those for whom English is a second language and those with learning disabilities.
Need gently used supplies? Stop by their office supply exchange room. The office exchange room has gently used school supplies donated by students and faculty. The best times to visit the office exchange room is at the beginning of the semester when there are more supplies to choose from. Students can come in and simply take what they need; there is no limit. The LC requests that you write down what you take so they can be aware of the most popular items in order to have them in stock.
The LC offers a quiet and inviting space for students to study independently and provides free tea and coffee. Stop by on Mondays - Wednesdays: 9am - 8pm, Thursdays: 9am - 3pm; 5pm - 8pm and Fridays: 9am - 5pm.
