Chemistry Department Receives Grant

Liquid Chromatogram/Mass Spectrometer

The Chemistry department was granted $230,000 from National Science Foundation's (NSF) to purchase new equipment.
Dr. Matthew Saderholm applied for the grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grant program in January 2004. The department received their acceptance in June and the money was available in August.

The department used the grant to purchase a Liquid Chromatogram/Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS) with the grant money. The LC/MS allows the Chemistry department to do mass spectrometry on molecules dissolved in solutions. Dr. John Fenn, Berea College graduate developed this machine to get these solutions analyzed for mass. This instrument will help to analyze everything from small drugs up to large biomolecules like proteins and DNA.

Besides education, the LC/MS will be used primarily for research. Almost all chemists at Berea College work with molecules in solution. Matthew Saderholm will use the LC/MS in a new project started in collaboration with Appalachia-Science in the Public Interest (ASPI). They have been trying to encourage ginseng as a crop to replace tobacco and having the equipment here will save time and money from shipping the ginseng to Ohio. With the help of Berea College, the ASPI will now be able to analyze ginseng samples collected to determine which genocides are present and in what concentrations.

Saderholm also wishes to set up an outreach program reaching younger students still in middle or high school. He states, "I hope we can get some more middle and high school kids thinking about science as a profession through showing them what we can do right here in Berea."
