| Women's Tennis Defeats Midway
Berea College women's tennis team won 7-2 in the October 22 match against Midway College.
Mai Nguyen delivers a smashing return
The excitement of the match played out during the number two doubles team, Mai Nguyen and Consolate Uwamariya. Senior Mai Nguyen played a smashing game along with partner Consolate Uwamariya, a junior. Although Berea allowed Midway to catch up halfway through the set, Berea came back in a tiebreaker to win 9-8(1). Uwamariya commented, "I was very happy with the outcome. Mai and I played so well together." The number three doubles team, senior Lorina Bustle and sophomore JoEllen Pederson, also won their match. The other wins of the set included singles Tshewang Dorji, Mai Nguyen, Consolate Uwamariya, JoEllen Pederson, and Mai Yang.
Uwamariya's singles match was another thrill during the match. Although Uwamariya's #4 single was lost 0-2, she was able to rally and win the next 12 games. Teammates were supportive on the sidelines and extremely happy with the individual and overall results against Midway. Senior Deidra Cody commented, "I have never seen such unity and support in my years on the team!"
This particular match showed great improvement for the Berea team since the last match against Midway at the beginning of the season where they lost 4-5. As the team finished up their season against Indiana University Southeast the following day with a loss against the division champs, that did not kill their esteem. They have high hopes for a repeat performance of the match against Midway during the annual conference held from November 4-6 in French Lick, Indiana.
