International Education Week

The fifth annual International Education Week (IEW) is being celebrated around the world to promote global learning.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Secretary of Education Rod Paige have called for the celebration of IEW, November 15 22, 2004. IEW is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that involve education and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences throughout the globe.

The Berea College International Center work on similar initiatives presented by Powell and Paige all year round. In observance os International Education Week, they are promoting international education by highlighting a variety of events around campus such as the Study Abroad Fair, the Internatnioal Center's Open House and much more. Allison Garfinkle, International Center Coordinator commented that, "International Edcuation Week is a great idea, but we already do so much to promote international education, we can just take it as a good job and keep up the good work." She also commented that, "Seeing that a week is being dedicated around the world, it lets us see how far we are ahead of the game."

IEW is not just for the U.S., however. All over the world institutions are using this week to promote global education. In the United Kingdom and Europe, this year's emphasis is based on the theme of building international education links through sports and education, including, subject associations, businesses, universities, colleges, unions, voluntary and sports organisations etc. 2004 is the European Year of Education Through Sports. This was also the year for the Summer Olympics and Euro 2004.
