Concert Choir Warms Up for Busy Performance Season

Straight off an impressive performance at the annual Fall concert on Sunday, November 14 director Stephen Bolster plans for a busy year.

The 53 student group performed twentieth-century anthems, Baroque motets, sacred and secular compositions by Charles Ives, and well-known American Negro spirituals. Solo performances from Staff Accompanists Susan Henthorn and Ryan Shirar joined Berea College staff members Tripp Bratton on percussion and Atossa Kramer on clarinet.

Although the group is "smaller than last year… there is a closer relationship between the members and a better group rapport" according to Bolster. "The students have been singing this fall with more energy and focus than in the past couple of years." The high morale is augmented by upcoming shows that give the group a collective goal. The first among those is the Annual Berea College Music Department Christmas Concert on Sunday December, 5 in Union Church. Featuring at least one musical selection from every college musical group, the Christmas concert is a great opportunity to ring in the new holiday season.

Next semester's schedule includes the yearly spring tour and Spring Convocation. The Concert Choir has always enjoyed Bolster's leadership in planning impressive tour venues including a performance for the Pope in Vatican City in summer 2002. This year's tour is no exception. A four-city performance circuit is planned for Cincinnati, Chicago, St. Louis, and Murray, KY. The season wraps up with the two-day Spring Convocation in Gray Auditorium on April 30 and May 1.
