Lady Mountaineers Score High Rankings

Throughout the course of the season, Berea's Lady Mountaineers have accumulated an impressive assortment of national rankings.

In the past two seasons the ladies' team has practically re-written the record books for both Berea College and national standings, including: scoring, three-point field goals made per game, assists, steals, offensive rebounds, and total rebounds per game. Senior team member Morissa Benberry says "The theme for the year is "No Fear!" We have come to the conclusion that when we play like we have nothing to lose and we give everything we have, we are successful."

Not only are the Lady Mountaineers breaking team records, but individual team members have asserted their talent, staking claim to their own national rankings. Rebecca May, a sophomore, leads the nation at the number one spot in three-point field goals made per game. May also holds fourth place in assist/turnover ratio, thirteenth in three-point field goal percentage, and nineteenth in scoring. Senior Ashley Miller is a close second in the nation in offensive rebounds. Freshman Jessica Engle holds third place in the number of three-point field goals made per game, while Senior Kim Owen currently holds seventh place in the assist/turnover ratio, moving up from ninth place. Crystal Davis, a junior, holds eighth place in the assist/turnover ratio category and ranks seventeenth for assists per game. Sophomore De-An Watkins is ranked fourteenth and Freshman Kenita Ball twenty-fifth in assist/turnover ratio. Morissa Benberry, also entered the 1,000 point club during a game in the Virgin Islands. Ashley Miller is the 500 rebound club and the all time leading female rebounder for Berea College athletics.

According to women's basketball coach, Bunky Harkleroad, the team practices passing, shooting, dribbling and the fundamentals of basketball everyday. As the season progresses, the team hopes to make it to the national tournament; improving everyday to fulfill their potential and to represent the school and community. Says Harkleroad, "This is the best team I've coached at Berea College. This is a terrific group of players, I am very fortunate to be a part of this." Adds Benberry, "My experience at Berea College has been a great one. I have had the opportunity to sort of make my mark in Berea College history while helping to build a successful basketball program."
