| Cheers, Dave.
Family, friends, and collegues bid farewell to Provost Dave Porter as he takes a sabbatical.
After diligently working with Berea's students, faculty, and staff for four years, Porter takes a sabbatical. Showing appreciation for his commitment to the college, friends, faculty, staff, and family gathered to offer Dave their well-wishes.
Dave doesn't take for granted the time that he has spent as provost at BC. "It's an honor and privilege to do something that I've enjoyed very much," said Dave. "Berea has a mission worth working for."
Many of his colleagues expressed how impressed they were with his devotion to students. "I've learned to keep the focus on the students through him," stated Susan Vaughn, senior administrative assistant director.
"One question he'd continually pose on the students was 'so what do you think,'" said Stephanie Browner, dean of the faculty. "He is a very student-oriented teacher and administrator."
Dave eagerly anticipates the days of his sabbatical ahead. "I plan to take time to read, write, think and do all the things that administrators don't have time to do." Dave doesn't have to go far to do so as he'll be sticking close to his family and his birthplace, Berea.
Dave will return. After his sabbatical, Dave will return to take a faculty position in the psychology department. Carolyn Newton, newly hired provost, will take over on August 1.
Dave received a student-made stool as a parting gift from the faculty. Then, friends and colleagues lifted their punch glasses to offer a toast. "Cheers Dave," they said in unison.
