B.A. Degree with a Major in Communication
Requirements for the Major
A major in Communication is achieved by the completion of the following requirements, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Core Courses
COM 100 and 220 (formerly 300)
Required Capstone Course
COM 410
Required Distribution Courses
Four (4) additional course credits, at least one chosen from each Group (see below), and at least one at the 300 level.
Group 1 Communication & Cultural Identity
COM 206, 207, 305 (also AFR) and 310 (also WGS)
Group 2 Strategic Communication
any combination of COM 103 A or B (a 1/4-credit course that must be repeated a total of four times to equal one full course credit); 186/286/386/486; 390/490A, 390/490B, 395/495, 397/497A, 397/497B, and 398/498, BUS 257, 363, ENG 220, 280, 284, 380, PHI 106, PSY 210, SOC 220, TEC 180, 382, or THR 227.
Two (2) additional course credits chosen from either Group 1 or Group 2 above, or from the following

Exploring the Major
Students interested in this major should take COM 100 as early as possible.
Admission to the Major
Successful completion of at least one COM course.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete degree requirements within eight terms)
Students are encouraged to complete COM 220 (formerly COM 300), a survey course that helps prepare students for other course work in the major, before or during the term in which they declare the major. Freshmen are discouraged from taking COM 220 until their sophomore year. COM 410 should be taken during the senior year.
