Feedback from a Seasoned Faculty Member in Math and General Education
I've had two CTL midterm assessments, and each time was able to see a variety of benefits.
First, the assessment provided a mechanism, following the CTL visit, for me to have a conversation with my students about aspects of the course that they perceived to not be working. In some cases we made adjustments to the course and in others we left things as they were, but with a deeper understanding on both sides of what the costs and benefits of that decision would be.
Second, the assessment had a noticeable positive effect on both the attitudes of my students and on my relationship with them. I believe that taking the time to have the assessment done signaled to my students something about the type of learning community that I was aiming for in a way that would have been hard for me to do without the CTL's involvement.
Finally, I found both opportunities to evolve and grow pedagogically as the [assessment process helped identify] my blind spots, and [provide] affirmations that encouraged me regarding things that were working well.
